Mia Mulvey
An Associate Professor of Studio Art at the University of Denver, Mia Mulvey’s studio process is one of investigating environment, wonder, material, and digital technologies. Conceptually her work addresses the recording of time, climate change, and our relationship to remote landscapes. This line of inquiry is supported by her overall creative practice and interest in the interplay between art/science and ceramics/technology. She received her M.F.A from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her B.F.A from Arizona State University. Her work has shown in numerous venues such as the Denver Art Museum (Colorado), American Museum of Ceramic Art (California), ASU Ceramic Research Center (Arizona), and Goodwin Fine Art (Colorado). She is a recipient of a Colorado Council on the Arts fellowship, a PROF grant from the University of Denver, and residencies at Kohler Arts in Industry (Wisconsin), Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center (Denmark), The Arctic Circle Residency (Svalbard), and The Montello Foundation (Nevada).
Mia Mulvey’s work featured in The Space(s) Between is Listening to Distance, 2020, paper, photograph, audio recorder and microphones, chair. Dimensions variable. Seen at left is a detail on the larger installation, shown below.
Listening to Distance explores the concept of sound and what it means to listen, not to the sound of humans but to remoteness and the passage of time. This work was made in the desert at the Montello Residency, which the artist undertook in June 2020.
